Gamefreaks was given the opportunity to talk to Scott Bartlett, the CEO for Orcon Internet Limited in NZ. ?Scott became the CEO in 2007, and was listed as the youngest leader of a Telecommunications Provider. So we decided to put Scott in the hot seat to give us the spin as to where Orcon is heading, specifically in regards to gaming.

To break the ice can you tell our readers a little about yourself (background and hobbies) and what you do in the industry?

I?ve worked in the internet game all my working life. I have been running Orcon since 2007, before that I ran another smaller ISP. Work takes up a good chunk of my time, but I try and squeeze chunks of socializing and time riding my latest toy ? a Ducati Monster 696 motorbike.

Are you a big gamer? If so what console do you have and what are your favourite games?

I?d call myself a casual gamer. We have an Xbox 360 and a PS3, but I tend to head back to the games I grew up with ? SimCity2000 and Transport Tycoon. So, I guess when I?m not running a company, I spend time pretending to run a city or another company. I had a play around on the Star Trek MMO online the other day and loved that (I?m, for my sins, a Trekkie).

In 2007 LLU (Local Loop Unbundling) was a big thing for Orcon, enabling you to install equipment in the Ponsonby Exchange where you were able to deliver ADSL2+ from your own DSLAM. This allowed you to become the first ISP (Internet Service Provider) to commercially launch ADSL2+. Now with UFB (Ultra-Fast Broadband) on the way, what does this mean for Orcon?

It?s all about innovation. As a mass market play, it?s new technology, and that means we can have fun inventing stuff to maximize its potential. It?s an exciting time to be in the internet game.

What will UFB mean to consumers and how will it affect the roadmap for Orcon? Will there be specific products on offer and ultimately with fibre to the home what will it mean for gamers?

UFB will be awesome for gamers. Fibre is as good as it gets when it comes to connectivity. However, content is where we?ll see some interesting changes. In the US Netflix accounts for 20-25% of all traffic. In the UK it?s the same for iPlayer. People want great content, and in a UFB world it will be easier to get that content to them.

Orcon has announced Zero-rated Steam Server (based in the Orcon datacentre), specifically for kiwi gamers where traffic is zero rated. Given that most ISPs have data usage caps, how big a deal is this for consumers?

We think it?s a massive deal. One of the main barriers to downloading games from Steam has been data charges. We?ve wiped that barrier out. We knew it would be popular, but have been blown away by the positive feedback. And that feels really good, that we can do something quite simple from a technical standpoint that benefits people so much.

You have launched a community gaming site (games.orcon.net.nz), can you tell our readers about what it offers and why you put it together?

This was really driven by some of the Orcon staff who are big gamers. They saw the need to local servers and a community to support that. It will, no doubt, be shaped by the community and what they want from it.

How big a deal is gaming to Orcon as a company and to staff?

Again, it?s massive. Orcon has a long history supporting gamers and appealing to gamers. Most of our technical team, including the head of networks, are gamers, so they know what they want from an ISP and work hard to make sure the network works well for gamers. Gamers demand the best, and if they get the best they are happy to reward an ISP buy opening their wallets.

As the gaming industry is growing at a rate of knots, what impacts does this have on ISP?s given that more gamers are online for longer periods, and games require reliable and faster bandwidth?

As an ISP, our job is to predict network trends, and scale up to meet demand. It?s always changes, and we have to be on our toes, but that?s what makes it exciting.

There is a lot of talk about the new laws coming in to play around downloading movies and the role of ISPs as enforcers. Can you explain how it will work and what consumers should expect? How big a deal is it really and should we be worried about threats made from hackers such as Anonymous who have indicated they will attack any agency that supports such ?violations of free speech??

At the end of the day, NZ ISPs have to comply with the law. We have been vocal over the past few years about changes we don?t think were ideal, but it?s done now, and we have to follow procedure. Internet NZ?s site 3strikes.net.nz is well worth a read if you want to delve into that procedure, it?s a great resource.

Does Orcon have any more ideas on how to continue to support the gaming industry in NZ?

Interest in economic stability and investment in mining marks a new approach for the resurgent Islamist group, ousted from power by U.S.-backed Afghan forces in 2001.

"Afghanistan has vast arable land, rich mines and high potential of energy resources, therefore, we can make investments," Mullah Omar said in a lengthy statement carried by the SITE online monitoring service on Sunday.

Such investments would "wrangle ourselves from the tentacles of poverty, unemployment, backwardness and ignorance," the reclusive leader said in honor of Eid al-Fitr, Islam's most important festival, which marks the end of Ramadan and will most likely kick off in Afghanistan on Tuesday.

Omar also said the ongoing battle against the NATO-led forces would lead to an "imminent victory" for the Taliban.

'Without any discrimination'
NATO is racing against the clock to train Afghanistan's poorly equipped army and police force by the end of 2014, the deadline for U.S. combat troops' exit and when all security responsibilities will be handed over to the Afghans.

The United States and NATO earlier this year reluctantly backed Kabul's peace plan, which involves negotiating with some members of the Taliban.

But the extremist group has repeatedly said it will not consider that until all foreigners fighting in its country have left.

The Taliban's interest in Afghanistan's natural resources coincides with government plans to explore what Kabul says is Asia's largest unmined iron deposit ? the Hajigak project in the center of the country.

But experts warn the bounty from such plans could be decades away with potential investors facing infrastructure, security and corruption hurdles.

Taking a softer tone than in the past, Omar also said that the Taliban would ensure the private sector would be safeguarded and that "businessmen will be further encouraged, without any discrimination, to serve their religion and country."

Under the group's extremist rule from 1996-2001 ? which gained global criticism for its harsh treatment of women ? shops selling music, certain toys and some clothing were banned from operating as they were deemed un-Islamic.

Japan's jobless rate climbs to 4.7 percent in July (AP)

TOKYO ? Japan's jobless rate has risen for the second straight month.

The government announced Tuesday that the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate climbed to 4.7 percent in July, edging up from 4.6 percent in June.

The result reflects the fragility of the world's No. 3 economy, which is wrestling with a strong yen and an increasingly uncertain outlook for the global economy.

But the actual jobs picture may be worse because the data do not include the three prefectures hardest hit by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami. In Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures, there are ongoing reports of out-of-work residents unable to find jobs to replace ones that were wiped out by the disaster.

Mark Sawyer: Obama's Rockwell Choice and Response Tell the Story

As a scholar of public opinion, I love to read the comments following articles. Scholars of racial attitudes have found it harder to get individuals to reveal racist beliefs to strangers over the phone. We call it the principle policy gap. Whites tend to support the principle of racial equality, but oppose even very limited forms of civil rights enforcement, that help bring about equality. While some call this "principled conservatism," others have used a variety of techniques including experiments to show that both conscious and unconscious racist motives drive these choices. The Internet however, has provided for me, a treasure trove of data. Articles about immigrants, poverty, the president, sports etc. are accompanied with relatively unfiltered anonymous comments, where individuals can say what they think without fear of repercussion. While the comments cannot be used as representative samples in the way that well crafted telephone surveys can, they do reveal much about the logic that underlies certain reactions.

Articles on research contradicting basic assumptions about the "culture of poverty," are often met with responses that repeat the basic faulty assumptions of the "culture of poverty" arguments. Articles that attempt to address the faulty relationship between race and intelligence and the general idea that race is a social not a biological construct, are met with comments affirming the "common sense" that race is biological. Articles about budget shortfalls in the UC system and tuition hikes routinely assert those budget shortfalls are a result of educating "illegal immigrants," via the California Dream Act. These comments are made even if the article confirms undocumented students are less than ? of 1 percent of students in the UC system. It is with this in mind I turned my attention with interest to the articles on President Obama's choice to display the Norman Rockwell painting, "The Problem We All Live With," in the White House.

Norman Rockwell, known for his idyllic portraits of small town America, and his unique brand of American romanticism did as much as anyone to promote notions of American exceptionalism in the mid-twentieth century. Rockwell's portraits of Americans at work, play, and worship sell Americans and the world, an image of America as hardworking, self-reliant, optimistic and white. The scenes in most of Rockwell's paintings differ sharply from the ugliness of the image in, "The Problem We All Live With," the painting chosen by Obama, and in many ways make the painting an exception.

However, I see another logic behind Rockwell's painting and Obama's choice of it, that I felt was lost on most commenters. Much of the commentary on the painting was overtly racist. But more disturbing was that most "reasonable" commenters saw the painting as "divisive," or "opening wounds." One commenter thoughtfully argued, "A more appropriate rendering for the White House walls would be one that depicts triumph over the shame." I found this line of reasoning profoundly disturbing.

Given it is less "racist" than many of the other comments, I had to ask myself, "what's so wrong with this?" For the answer I turned to the image itself. There are several things that stand out about the image. One is the N-Word written across the wall. Another is the tomato splattered on the wall. Yet another are the legs and torsos of the federal marshals guarding Ruby Bridge's pathway to school. But I realized what my focal point for the image has always been, Ruby. Ruby is well dressed, standing up straight, showing no signs of fear. She is walking resolutely, as she holds her head up high, and her book and ruler in hand. Her face is the only face we see in the image. She is a portrait of heroism. One major thing that characterizes the civil rights movement is that ordinary Americans: Black, White, Latino Asian, Jew etc., many of them children or teenagers, stood up for their rights. They overcame fear, hatred and violence, in order to show their fellow Americans the evils of segregation. This brilliant painting captures that spirit. It is what makes it a great work of art. But the hero in the painting is Ruby.

I then realized that many of the commenters did not see her. There is another wrinkle to the painting, perspective. I realize that the painting places the viewer among the angry mob. This perspective for some viewers elicits shame. The image that for me communicates pride and triumph, for them depicts collective shame. But the image offers another narrative that these viewers refuse to embrace.

In Obama's campaign, he frequently used the imagery and iconography of the Civil Rights movement. However, he did not use it as an us vs. them, but as a theme for which he was lambasted by Sarah Palin for, a theme of, "American becoming." Obama's principle take on Patriotism was that we cannot uncritically love our nation or trumpet exceptionalism, we have too often been imperfect. Slavery, Jim Crow, our treatment of women, and even to some degree the unfairness of social inequality are struggles that America and Americans must continually battle both in our current moment and historically to make "A more perfect union."

The United States for Obama and many African-American political thinkers, exists in stark contrast to the common narrative of American exceptionalism. American is not exceptional because of its perfection as developed by its founders. America for Obama and many black thinkers is exceptional because of the ability of regular Americans to fight to exercise their democratic rights, and to demand America live up to its principles of equality and justice for all. In that sense, Martin Luther King Jr. but also regular, even small Americans like Ruby, are heroes and founders of a better America. Their success is not a personal triumph or a triumph for their group, but an American triumph.

It is here that I find the commenters most disturbing. While they see themselves in the crowd, potentially throwing the tomatoes, they cannot see themselves in Ruby. Ruby is never an "American." Her triumph is not theirs. Ruby's struggle and heroism is at best invisible to them and at worst an "in your face" reminder of their own inadequacies. Ruby's victory and Obama's victory is a victory perhaps for African-Americans, but never America. This is in part, because Ruby, Obama, and African-Americans, are never "real Americans" to them. The "real Americans" are shouting at Ruby and throwing tomatoes, and they are embarrassed by it. The white nationalism and racial narcissism embedded in the critique of Obama's use of the painting demonstrates both Obama's challenge and the challenge that remains for overcoming racial inequality in the 21st century. If we cannot collectively own our progress and failures, if it is always, us vs. them, then how can we move forward?

Al-Qaida's No. 2 reported killed by US in Pakistan

WASHINGTON (AP) ? U.S. and Pakistani officials said Saturday that al-Qaida's second-in-command, Atiyah Abd al-Rahman, has been killed in Pakistan, delivering another big blow to a terrorist group that the U.S. believes to be on the verge of defeat.

Since Navy SEALs stormed Osama bin Laden's compound and killed him in May, the Obama administration has been unusually frank in its assessment that al-Qaida is on the ropes, its leadership in disarray. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said last month that al-Qaida's defeat was within reach if the U.S. could mount a string of successful attacks.

"Now is the moment, following what happened with bin Laden, to put maximum pressure on them," Panetta said, "because I do believe that if we continue this effort we can really cripple al-Qaida as a major threat."

A Libyan national, al-Rahman never had the worldwide name recognition of bin Laden or bin Laden's successor, Ayman al-Zawahiri. But al-Rahman was regarded as an instrumental figure in the terrorist organization, trusted by bin Laden to oversee al-Qaida's daily operations.

When the SEALs raided bin Laden's compound, they found evidence of al-Rahman's deep involvement in running al-Qaida.

Senior al-Qaida figures have been killed before, only to be replaced. But the Obama administration's tenor reflects a cautious optimism that victory in the decade-long fight against al-Qaida could be at hand.

"It does hold the prospect of a strategic defeat, if you will, a strategic dismantling, of al-Qaida," incoming CIA Director David Petraeus said in July.

Since bin Laden's death, counterterrorism officials have hoped to capitalize on al-Qaida's unsettled leadership. The more uncertain the structure, the harder it is for al-Qaida to operate covertly and plan attacks.

Al-Zawahiri is running the group but is considered a divisive figure who lacks the founder's charisma and ability to galvanize al-Qaida's disparate franchises.

A U.S. official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to summarize the government's intelligence on al-Rahman, said al-Rahman's death will make it harder for Zawahiri to oversee what is considered an increasingly weakened organization.

"Zawahiri needed Atiyah's experience and connections to help manage al-Qaida," the official said.

Al-Rahman was killed Aug. 22 in the lawless Pakistani tribal region of Waziristan, according to a senior administration who also insisted on anonymity to discuss intelligence issues.

A Pakistani intelligence official said al-Rahman died in a U.S. missile strike in Machi Khel village in North Waziristan on Aug. 22.

The U.S. official would not say how al-Rahman was killed. The Pakistani official did not say how the country's main intelligence agency, the ISI, knew that al-Rahman was dead. This official did not give his name in keeping with agency rules.

Intelligence officials had said at the time that four people were killed in the attack.

But a CIA drone strike was reported that day in Waziristan. Such strikes by unmanned aircraft are Washington's weapon of choice for killing terrorists in the mountainous, hard-to-reach area along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.

Al-Rahman has been thought to be dead before. Last year, there were reports that al-Rahman was killed in a drone strike; neither U.S. officials nor al-Qaida ever confirmed them. The officials who confirmed the death Saturday said it represented the consensus opinion of the U.S. government.

Palestinian: US warns of aid cut for statehood bid (AP)

JERUSALEM ? The Palestinians' chief negotiator said Friday that a U.S. diplomat had warned of a cut in aid to the Palestinians if they proceed with a unilateral bid for statehood at the U.N in September.

The U.S. said that negotiator Saeb Erekat had mischaracterized the words of the U.S. consul-general in Jerusalem, but declined to comment further.

Israel and the U.S. strongly oppose the Palestinians' U.N. plan, saying Palestinian statehood should only be achieved through negotiations. They maintain that a Palestinian state must emerge from Israeli-Palestinian negotiations, which have been stalled for almost a year.

Erekat said the U.S. Consul-General in Jerusalem, Daniel Rubinstein, told him Friday that the U.S. Congress will take "punitive measures" if the Palestinians proceed with seeking U.N. recognition of statehood.

"It will stop granting the Palestinians its annual aid package" of about $470 million, Rubinstein said, according to Erekat.

"If the Palestinian Authority seeks to upgrade its position at the U.N. through the General Assembly then the American Congress will take punitive measures against the Palestinian Authority including halting American assistance," Erekat quoted the consul-general as saying.

Congressional Republicans and Democrats have warned that American aid to the Palestinians is in jeopardy over issues including the push for statehood at the United Nations, as well as ties to Hamas and unwillingness to restart negotiations with Israel.

Senior Obama administration officials have insisted that the assistance is critical to peace and stability in the Mideast and to boosting Palestinian security forces and the economy, and have cautioned that cutting off aid would have serious repercussions.

"The U.S sees no benefits from the Palestinian efforts to get membership at the U.N. and its better to reach peace agreements through negotiations," Erekat quoted Rubinstein as saying.

"If the Palestinian Authority insists on going to the Security Council, then the U.S. will use the veto," Erekat quoted him as saying.

Erekat told the consul-general he wishes the U.S. would reconsider its position.

The U.S Consulate in Jerusalem said that the remarks attributed to the Consul-General were not accurate, but would not elaborate further.

"While we cannot get into private diplomatic discussions, this report is not an accurate portrayal of the U.S position, nor did Consul-General Rubinstein make the comments reported in the media," a statement released by the consulate said. "As President Obama has made clear, initiatives through the U.N. will not bring about the two-state solution and enduring peace which both parties and the U.S seek, therefore we continue to oppose initiatives by the Palestinians in the U.N. There is no substitute for serious and substantive negotiations between the parties, and that remains our focus."

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas will meet with EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton on Saturday and will discuss the latest developments with her ahead ofa meeting of EU foreign ministers in Poland next week, Palestinian officials said.

The U.N. vote is largely symbolic. The Palestinians believe it will send a powerful message to Israel. The Palestinians say they are assured nonmember state status if they turn to the General Assembly. A resolution by the General Assembly, however, would have little more than symbolic value because it would not be legally binding.

Palestinians are planning mass demonstrations across the West Bank and abroad to coincide with the September U.N. General Assembly session, which they hope will give official endorsement for their state. The statehood initiative reflects frustration with long-stalled Israeli-Palestinian peace negotiations.

The latest round of talks was launched last year, but they collapsed three weeks later when Palestinians pulled out over a dispute about Jewish construction in the West Bank and east Jerusalem ? areas the Palestinians envision as part of their future state.

Israel maintains that the issue of settlements will be solved once there are agreed-upon borders and repeatedly called on the Palestinians to resume talks in order to reach an agreement.

Makk, a citizen of Australia and sole caregiver to his sick spouse, Wells, applied for permanent residency but his application was denied in a decision based on the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). Wells is infuriated. ?It?s upsetting,? Wells said. ?I have no power, no right to keep my husband in this country. I love this country, I live here, I pay taxes and I have no right to share my home with the person I married.?

There are currently 36,000 same-sex bi-national couples in the United States, many of whom are routinely denied applications for lawful permanent residence and other relief from deportation due to the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). Enacted in 1996, DOMA prevents the federal government?including DHS?from recognizing marriages or civil unions of same-sex couples for purposes of receiving federal benefits. But couples like Makk and Wells may not be out of options just yet. according to DHS?s announcement yesterday, some positive factors that will be used in identifying low priority immigration cases include family relationships and strong community ties, both of which Administration officials indicated may apply to gay and lesbian bi-national couples. according to Mary Kenney, Senior Staff Attorney with the American Immigration Council?s Legal Action Center:

Immigration officers currently have the authority to exercise prosecutorial discretion, which essentially means that they have the authority to decide not to fully enforce immigration laws against an individual who is deserving of some relief but is not able to get it under any other law.

After DHS?s announcement yesterday, we?re really encouraged and hopeful [the guidelines] will provide relief to an even greater number of people than have previously received that relief. while it?s not a solution to the problems and the severe discrimination that DOMA has inflicted, it will hopefully set up a system for a much more comprehensive review of all cases which will give individuals an opportunity to really benefit on a much more systemic, equal playing field.

Many stakeholders?including DREAM Act students, gay and lesbian bi-national couples and others who may benefit from these guidelines?will be watching the Administration closely as they begin to review cases and implement the policy. Perhaps of the most concern to immigration advocates, however, is how the agency plans on implementing these guidelines to field offices and local law enforcement and what safeguards DHS puts in place to ensure the prosecutorial discretion guidelines are being followed.

The devil may live in the details, but folks have been suffering under our outdated and broken immigration system for far too long to get caught up in the lack of administrative follow through.

LOS ANGELES ? A Los Angeles jury has ordered film producer Jon Peters to pay his former assistant more than $3 million after finding she was subjected to sexual harassment and a hostile work environment.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? America is swiftly becoming a granny state.

Less frail and more involved, today?s grandparents are shunning retirement homes and stepping in more than ever to raise grandchildren while young adults struggle in the poor economy.

The newer grandparents are mainly baby boomers who are still working, with greater disposable income. Now making up 1 in 4 adults, grandparents are growing at twice the rate of the overall population and sticking close to family ? if their grandkids aren?t already living with them.

Grandparents in recent decades have often filled in for absent parents who were ill or battled addiction, or were sent to prison. The latest trend of grandparent involvement, reflected in census figures released Thursday, is now being driven also by the economy and the graying U.S. population, including the 78 million boomers born between 1946 and 1964 who began turning 65 this year.

?We help out in terms of running errands, babysitting, taking the grandkids to doctors? appointments, and for back-to-school shopping,? said Doug Flockhart of Exeter, N.H., listing some of the activities that he and his wife, Eileen, do for their five kids and seven grandchildren. They also pitch in with health care payments for family members due to insurance gaps, and their pace of activity has picked up substantially since their daughter, who lives three blocks away, gave birth to her first child this month. Flockhart, a retired architect, likes the family time even if he and his wife worry about their grandkids? futures. Their oldest grandchild is 16.

?It?s not so much the day in and day out, it?s the big picture as to how these young kids will grow up and pay for a college education and buy a house,? he said. ?The middle class is so much less well-off than it used to be. We?ve put aside some savings for them, but with seven grandchildren it can only go so far.?

Flockhart?s situation is increasingly common, demographers say.

?Grandparents have become the family safety net, and I don?t see that changing any time soon,? said Amy Goyer, a family expert at AARP. ?While they will continue to enjoy their traditional roles, including spending on gifts for grandchildren, I see them increasingly paying for the extras that parents are struggling to keep up with ? sports, camps, tutoring or other educational needs, such as music lessons.?

The latest numbers are based partly on separate analyses by Goyer and Peter Francese, founder of American Demographics magazine who is now a population analyst for the MetLife Mature Market Institute. Their data were supplemented with the latest 2010 census figures as well as interviews with Census Bureau and other experts.

Currently about 5.8 million children, or nearly 8 percent of all children, are living with grandparents identified as the head of household, according to 50-state census data released Thursday. That?s up from 4.5 million, or 6.3 percent, who lived in such households in 2000.

Much of the increase in grandparent caregivers occurred later in the decade after the recession eliminated jobs for many younger people, surveys indicate. The 8 percent share of children now living with grandparents is the largest in at least 40 years ? and it is believed to be the largest share ever, the population experts say.

In all, there are 62.8 million grandparents in the U.S., the most ever. They are projected to make up roughly 1 in 3 adults by 2020.

Nearly half the states had increases of 40 percent or more over the last decade in the number of grandchildren living with grandparents. They were led by states such as Nevada, Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, Arizona and Kentucky, which had influxes of young families or suffered higher rates of poverty.

On the other end of the scale, New Jersey, New York, Michigan and Louisiana saw the smallest increases, less than 10 percent. Each of those states saw slower population growth overall since 2000, particularly among young people.

The District of Columbia posted a decline of more than 20 percent in grandchildren living with grandparents, a sign of growing gentrification in the nation?s capital in which smaller-sized white families are replacing black families with grandparent caregivers, who are moving to suburban areas.

Francese says the stereotype of grandparents who are frail, receding and dependent is changing. He noted that unemployment among workers ages 25 to 34 last year was double that of Americans aged 55 to 64. U.S. households headed by baby boomers also commanded almost half of the nation?s total household income, and are more likely to be college graduates than grandparents in previous generations.

These grandparents reject living in senior communities in favor of ?aging in place? in their own homes, near family. In 2009, households ages 55 or older spent billions of dollars on infant food, clothes, toys, games, tuition and supplies for grandchildren, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

?Grandparents are supposed to be old, gray-haired people tottering around, but the vast majority are actually in the work force,? said Francese, who released a paper on the topic last month. ?There is not much doubt that the recent recession has brought grandparents and grandchildren together.?

The government figures come as a congressional supercommittee considers possible reductions to Medicare and Social Security to achieve $1.5 trillion in federal spending cuts under the terms of the debt ceiling agreement. Up until now, lawmakers? proposals to cut the entitlement programs have met resistance from older Americans, including those 45 and older, who now make up a majority of the voting-age population.

The committee must issue its recommendations by late November, with action by Congress before year?s end, or various parts of government will face automatic spending cuts.

Estella Hyde, 65, who lives near Erie, Pa., said additional government aid ? not spending cuts ? would go a long way for grandparents. She and her husband have raised their granddaughter, now 18, off and on since she was a year old, when Hyde?s daughter-in-law at the time said she didn?t want the burden.

Eventually the Hydes were able to adopt their granddaughter legally, which allowed her to have coverage under their health plan, but only after the couple fought through red tape and paid $10,000 in adoption fees. After a difficult childhood, her granddaughter will attend college this fall.

?It never happens in a happy situation where a son or daughter comes and says, ?I need you to raise a child for me,?? said Hyde, a nursing professor who is now retired. ?We were very lucky, we were able to financially take care of her and support her. But many grandparent caregivers need other sources of assistance.?
