More Republicans seeking NC House leadership jobs

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- Two more candidates have surfaced among North Carolina Republicans for leadership positions at the Legislature.

Rep. Julia Howard of Mocksville said Wednesday she's running for House speaker pro tempore, the chamber's No. 2 position. And Rep. Edgar Starnes of Granite Falls said in an interview he's running for majority leader.

Starnes and Howard first joined the House in the late 1980s.

Outgoing Majority Leader Paul Stam of Apex already has said he's running for speaker pro tem. Reps. Ruth Samuelson of Charlotte and David Lewis of Dunn want to become majority leader.

The House GOP caucus is holding Saturday its first meeting since expanding its majority on Election Day. The Republicans aren't expected to vote on the jobs but may decide to turn the majority leader's job into two positions.
