ASPCA Blogger Event ? Project Motherhood: Diary of a New York ...
Dear Diary,
Whenever I was invited to attend the Mom Central ASPCA Blogger Event, I had no idea that it would be so much more than just another event for my family to attend. In fact, this event has inspired my family and I so much, that it has turned into a journey of sorts for me and my boys.
When I was little, I begged and begged my parents for a dog. I even went as far as creating a dog club and persuaded my little sister to donate all of her birthday money to it. Finally, my parents gave in, and we found puppies for sale from a local breeder. Logan, as we named him is half yellow lab and half golden retriever,?and is still around and a part of my life whenever we go home to visit. My husband and I have been toying with the idea of getting Branden a dog for a while, me being more hesitent due to the big reponsability. (I keep thinking: am I ready for another ?child??) After this event, our minds were made up and we knew that we wanted to adopt through the ASPCA.
We arrived at the event at 10am to see a beautiful breakfast laid out for all of us bloggers, our partners, and kiddos. There were even coloring books and crayons to keep the kids busy. After eating, different member of the ASPCA spoke to us about the program and let us do a Q&A to answer any questions we had about their organization and the adoption process. They also enlightened me about one aspect of getting a pet that you particularly want to avoid.
Ever hear that you shouldn?t purchase an animal from a pet store? I always heard this, but never knew why. The reason is because the animals come from mills that are specific to their breed and are constantly being bred each and every time they are in heat. They are also kept in horribly small and unsanitary conditions. It is a vicious cycle that?clearly?must end. How can you help? The answer is simple: do not purchase pets, food, supplies, or anything at all from ANY petstore ANYWHERE. This is the only way that there will finally be an end to this cruelty.
After the Q&A, we got to tour the facilities and see all the wonderful dogs and cats that they have available for adoption. They are constantly getting new animals as new ones are being adopted, and they are all evaluated and taken such great care of. After the tour, we were sold! We were so impressed by everything overall that day, that adopting a dog became the only option for us. The ASPCA is so organized in their evaluation process, that walking through their facilities showed us that? dogs were even classified by what age group of children they would be best with. We instantly filled out the detailed questionare about our lifestlye and what we would want or need in a dog. Once a dog comes through their doors who is right for us, we will get a call. But, we also have the option to call everyday and see what new dogs were brought in.
Needless to say,?we are keeping our ears, eyes, and hearts open to finding the right dog for our family.?We couldn?t be more excited and thankful for this experience!

Allison
