Once again the Almonte Amateur Radio Club Inc. will be holding its annual banquet at the Almonte Royal Canadian Legion on January 12th 2013. This is a time when the club members (otherwise known as ham radio operators or ?Hams?) have a get together to celebrate the past year?s accomplishments, renew our commitment to the community and, in general, enjoy an evening meal with friends. Also invited are radio hams from adjacent clubs and local personages who support the club?s endeavours in the area of emergency communications.
The Almonte club has added 3 new members in 2012 and one of the New Year objectives is to recruit additional members. Currently the membership stands at 32.
During 2012 the club purchased and installed new state-of-the-art digital radio systems funded by an Ontario Trillium Foundation grant with additional support from the Town of Mississippi Mills, the Almonte Hub and the Civitan Club. This new system provides enhanced communications in the Lanark County area that would be used and operated by club volunteer radio amateurs in the event of an emergency that may affect the usual communication infrastructure such as the local telephone system and cell phones. In addition the club provides communication services for local community events as, for example, the Beazley Triathlon and the Mississippi River clean up this past fall.
Due to the generosity of the Almonte General Hospital, an Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) has been set up in a radio room alongside the hospital. Radios, computers, Lanark County maps and charts and other equipment are installed in readiness to provide amateur radio communication services in the event of an emergency. As well as serving the Mississippi Mills Community Control Group and the hospital other agencies served can include the Red Cross and others that may request communication services depending on the nature of the emergency.
As previously stated the club?s objective is to recruit new members. As with most things in life, change is inevitable and Amateur Radio as a hobby is changing also. Hence the club?s gravitation to new digital radios. If anyone (age is no barrier) is interested in operating radio frequency transmitters and receivers, digital computers, accessing the internet via amateur radio communications equipment and serving the community, the Almonte Amateur Radio Club is your ticket to becoming a ?ham.
You are encouraged to come to the banquet on January 12th 2013. It starts at 6:00pm with finger foods and a time to meet and mingle with club members.? A roast beef dinner will be served at 7:00pm. A highlight of the evening will be a presentation on flying radio controlled model aircraft by members of a local group. The cost for the banquet is $25 per person.? If you would like to attend contact Stan Madore at 613-256-2561.
If you can?t make the banquet, please contact the club president, Robin (Rob) Webb at 613-256-4026 or email [email?protected] for additional information on becoming a ?ham?. If you wish, the club can provide a speaker to provide a greater overview of its activities and the requirements to become a ham radio amateur.
Information about the club can be found at its website www.almontearclub.ca.
